Farm History

Abernathy Farm originated as the Laban Wilson House. In it's heyday it encompassed over 500 acres from what is now the Gastonia Municipal Airport to Beatty Road.
The original homestead is believed to have been built around 1888 by Lawson Henderson Stowe and features Stowe's signature curved staircase.
The house is also featured in the book, The Architectural Heritage of Gaston County, North Carolina.
Sadly, much of the farm has been sold off through out the years. However, Leonard Abernathy Sr. was able to purchase the last 18 acres of the farm and the original homestead in the 1960's. The farm has now remained in the Abernathy Family for three generations. The original homestead underwent major renovations starting in 2007. The current owner, Lisa Abernathy, has been living in the original farm house since January 2009.
Leonard Abernathy Sr. started out raising, Black Angus, beef cattle. He later diversified his herd with Polled Herefords. He got out of the cattle business in the late 1980's and except for his grand daughter, Lisa's, couple of childhood ponies and occasional hay production the farm laid dormant for over 10 years.
